Yogi's a Winner!

Delighted to report that Yogi has won his first field trial. Many thanks to the Radbourne Shoot in Derbyshire, who did a fantastic job of hosting The German Shorthaired Pointer Association Novice Field Trial, despite Covid's best efforts. Hunt Point Retrieve Trials are open to all Kennel Club recognised breeds that HPR, and yesterday's field included a Vizsla, a Weimaraner, a Large Munsterlander, two Wire-haired Vizslas, two Brittany Spaniels, three German Shorthaired Pointer

A windy weekend pointing grouse

Islay and I had a great weekend in Yorkshire where she had her first opportunity to run on a grouse moor. It was this Kennel Club event twelve years ago that introduced me to the pinnacle of all dog work - which I still can't get enough of. Yogi (The Wirehaired Vizsla) at 16 months

Good retrieve Yogi ran in his first Field Trial last week. Things started off reasonably well; we were called up to a retrieve that the previous dog had failed on, I sent him out to the area that the judge had indicated, and he quickly located, and retrieved the bird to hand. Poor discipline So far so good, but things then went south pretty quickly. We were given a field of turnips to hunt that was nicely in to wind. Islay The 10 Month Old Vizsla

18.5 kg and 22.5 inches. Little Islay went through a bit of nervous adolescent period but she has emerged much more confident. I have seen this before in bitches of her age so wasn't overly concerned. She's sharp as a tack and reacts instantly to the whistle. Training is coming on well, she marks retrieves accurately, and goes out like a rocket. Her hunting is also high octane doing everything at 100mph. I have high hopes that she will do well in field trials. She is pictured

Yogi (The Wirehaired Vizsla) at 14 months

26.2kg and 26.5 inches - I think it's safe to say he has stopped growing upwards, although he's pretty gangly, so I'm still expecting him fill out. He likes nothing more than being out with the gun. Islay The 8 Month Old Vizsla

17.2kg and 22 1/2 inches - looks like she’s stopped growing. If that’s is the case, she’ll be one of the smaller Vizsla bitches, but that wouldn’t worry me, as what she lacks in stature, she makes up for with enthusiasm. He retrieving is excellent and we’ve just starting hunting. She pointed for the first time yesterday, but it was all a bit muddled, and we didn’t get a nice flush - fingers crossed today. How To Communicate With Your Dog

Islay The 6 Month Old Vizsla

15.5kg and 21.5 inches. Here she is modelling a tan Red Dog Company Collar - these went down well at the Burghley Horse Trials, where top quality English Bridle Leather, is clearly appreciated. She still hasn't shown any interest in hunting so training is focused on retrieving. I'm getting the dummy back to hand, but it feels like I'm in the slips, rather than one of Yogi's relaxed deliveries. She is however excellent at marking down, and finding, and her retrieves in cover.

14.9kg and 20 1/2 inches - back from holiday and into training. Recall and sit, at any distance, are now pretty good. She’s excellent - better than Yogi - at marking down retrieves. She’s got the hang of memory retrieves and we’ve just started blind retrieves. Yogi (The Wirehaired Vizsla) at 46 weeks

26.6 kg and 25 1/2 inches. Thankfully he's stopped growing taller, but his weight is still creeping up, as he slowly changes from gangly teenager to something sturdier. Here he is, enjoying the view from the Giant's Face in the Cairngorms, at the end of his first Scottish Adventure. Islay on Skye - she was too young for grouse hunting but still had a great holiday. With the RIB in tow the journey up to Scotland took twelve hours but the dogs were comfortable on their Red Dog Company Large Mat. Locked on point - Yogi had already pointed a few pheasants at home and adapted quickly to the hill. I was lucky enough to be given access to a piece of ground to practise on, and it wasn't long, before he pointed his first grouse.
