The Glorious Twelfth

An absolute privilege to be out on the North York Moors for the first day of the new season. The auspicious event was a field trial organised by the Norfolk and Suffolk HPR Field Trial Club. We started early to avoid the heat with Islay running at number one. Conditions were perfect, running into a gentle headwind, on shortish heather. The Season is Over

With the game season over, it’s time to have a think which areas of dog work could do with a little attention. Islay was put out of a field trial, for failing on a blind retrieve, which was lying in waterlogged ground on the far side of a stream. So we need to work on retrieving over an obstacle, handling, and then persisting in a defined area until she finds what she’s looking for. Circumstances dictated that Yogi was pressed in to service very early, but he's taken it all in his stride. He's becoming adept at hunting, pointing and retrieving, become a pleasure to take stalking, and will even sit on a peg if watched very closely. Providing he's well exercised he is also reasonably civilised in the house, as long as gloves, shoes, and remote controls, aren't left within his considerable reach. Annual Northern Pilgrimage

Vizslas are Hunt Point Retrievers; versatile dogs equally at home on the high ground, low ground and foreshore. Having said that, in my eyes they are truly in their element on the hill, working alongside their handler, in pursuit of the ‘King of Gamebirds’. We had the opportunity to hunt some truly wild birds on the Isle of Skye, on a moor that isn’t managed for grouse, so we worked hard and earned our brace of birds. Before the Aga was turned off

Good retrieve Yogi ran in his first Field Trial last week. Things started off reasonably well; we were called up to a retrieve that the previous dog had failed on, I sent him out to the area that the judge had indicated, and he quickly located, and retrieved the bird to hand. Islay The 10 Month Old Vizsla

18.5 kg and 22.5 inches. Little Islay went through a bit of nervous adolescent period but she has emerged much more confident. I have seen this before in bitches of her age so wasn't overly concerned. She's sharp as a tack and reacts instantly to the whistle. Training is coming on well, she marks retrieves accurately, and goes out like a rocket. Her hunting is also high octane doing everything at 100mph. I have high hopes that she will do well in field trials. She is pictured

26.2kg and 26.5 inches - I think it's safe to say he has stopped growing upwards, although he's pretty gangly, so I'm still expecting him fill out. He likes nothing more than being out with the gun. Islay The 8 Month Old Vizsla

17.2kg and 22 1/2 inches - looks like she’s stopped growing. If that’s is the case, she’ll be one of the smaller Vizsla bitches, but that wouldn’t worry me, as what she lacks in stature, she makes up for with enthusiasm. He retrieving is excellent and we’ve just starting hunting. She pointed for the first time yesterday, but it was all a bit muddled, and we didn’t get a nice flush - fingers crossed today. Islay The 6 Month Old Vizsla

15.5kg and 21.5 inches. Here she is modelling a tan Red Dog Company Collar - these went down well at the Burghley Horse Trials, where top quality English Bridle Leather, is clearly appreciated. She still hasn't shown any interest in hunting so training is focused on retrieving. I'm getting the dummy back to hand, but it feels like I'm in the slips, rather than one of Yogi's relaxed deliveries. She is however excellent at marking down, and finding, and her retrieves in cover.

Islay The 24 Week Old Vizsla

14.9kg and 20 1/2 inches - back from holiday and into training. Recall and sit, at any distance, are now pretty good. She’s excellent - better than Yogi - at marking down retrieves. She’s got the hang of memory retrieves and we’ve just started blind retrieves. Yogi (The Wirehaired Vizsla) at 46 weeks

26.6 kg and 25 1/2 inches. Thankfully he's stopped growing taller, but his weight is still creeping up, as he slowly changes from gangly teenager to something sturdier. Here he is, enjoying the view from the Giant's Face in the Cairngorms, at the end of his first Scottish Adventure.
