The Season is Over

With the game season over, it’s time to have a think which areas of dog work could do with a little attention. Islay was put out of a field trial, for failing on a blind retrieve, which was lying in waterlogged ground on the far side of a stream. So we need to work on retrieving over an obstacle, handling, and then persisting in a defined area until she finds what she’s looking for. Yogi's a Winner!

Delighted to report that Yogi has won his first field trial. Many thanks to the Radbourne Shoot in Derbyshire, who did a fantastic job of hosting The German Shorthaired Pointer Association Novice Field Trial, despite Covid's best efforts. Hunt Point Retrieve Trials are open to all Kennel Club recognised breeds that HPR, and yesterday's field included a Vizsla, a Weimaraner, a Large Munsterlander, two Wire-haired Vizslas, two Brittany Spaniels, three German Shorthaired Pointer

Circumstances dictated that Yogi was pressed in to service very early, but he's taken it all in his stride. He's becoming adept at hunting, pointing and retrieving, become a pleasure to take stalking, and will even sit on a peg if watched very closely. Providing he's well exercised he is also reasonably civilised in the house, as long as gloves, shoes, and remote controls, aren't left within his considerable reach. Annual Northern Pilgrimage

Vizslas are Hunt Point Retrievers; versatile dogs equally at home on the high ground, low ground and foreshore. Having said that, in my eyes they are truly in their element on the hill, working alongside their handler, in pursuit of the ‘King of Gamebirds’. We had the opportunity to hunt some truly wild birds on the Isle of Skye, on a moor that isn’t managed for grouse, so we worked hard and earned our brace of birds. Good retrieve Yogi ran in his first Field Trial last week. Things started off reasonably well; we were called up to a retrieve that the previous dog had failed on, I sent him out to the area that the judge had indicated, and he quickly located, and retrieved the bird to hand. 26.2kg and 26.5 inches - I think it's safe to say he has stopped growing upwards, although he's pretty gangly, so I'm still expecting him fill out. He likes nothing more than being out with the gun. 26.6 kg and 25 1/2 inches. Thankfully he's stopped growing taller, but his weight is still creeping up, as he slowly changes from gangly teenager to something sturdier. 26.4kg and 25 1/2 inches - I took this picture on an evening’s stalk last week. We saw a lovely roe buck, but he was too good to take, especially before the rut. Yogi’s wearing one of our Red Dog Collars, traditionally made using English bridle leather; they’ll last a lifetime as long as they’re given an occasional bit of TLC. Not long now....

In the meantime, a beautiful video featuring John, a good friend and Islay's breeder, hawking in Scotland. Islay will be too young this year but it will be interesting to see how Yogi performs on the hill. I'll probably run him on a line initially, to encourage him to be steady to the flush, and he certainly won't be doing a full day's work. None of the ground we visit has many grouse, so it's not uncommon for the dogs to be running for 45 minutes or longer, between points. W
